The Answer:
Because if it was legal the billions of dollars spent on the drug war would cease to line the pockets of the wealthy corporations that run the US. The real tragedy is all the poor people that now have criminal records and kids who have spent 10 years in jail for possession of just a joint in states like Texas. In many states the penalty for possession has been reduced, but at least 40% of the jail population in this country are there for non-violent crimes. These laws provide a steady stream of inmates to keep the corporate owned prison system profitable.
